Mayan temples and goodbye Mexico

Image
23 November, San Jose, Costa Rica Yesterday I I left Merida to make my may to Mexico City and from there to San Jose. I was not feeling so well and the two hour delay of my second flight didn't really help to lift my mood. But then, when I stepped into the my Uber at 12.30 am and the driver was just the the perfect version of a friendly, happy Tico, and I saw the lights of this cosy city between the mountains, I had the kind of feeling that I am coimg home. After a few hours of so-so sleep in a dormbed I woke and felt exhausted. I think my body and mind are just starting to cope with alle the different things I did in the last two month. So I decided to get out of San Jose by tomorrow and just make my way to the beach- Playa Samara, the beach village close to the turtle project I was working in 5 years ago. Now I am looking forward to my private (!) room and some days of relaxing. But first I need to catch up a bit with my last week in Mexico. I ended the last post with my trip...

Touristy Tulum, quiet lagoon and incredibly blue water in Bacalar

Friday 16 November, Campeche This post will start in Tulum , which was my stop after Valladolid. After a short busride Memo, Ana and me arrived in this carribean town on the 7th of November. A cousin of Memo had been there a few years ago and had praised Tulum's beach as the most beautiful of the world. So we checked in our hotel, of which the nicest part was the garden, and went to explore the 'town' a bit. Actually everything in Tulum is located along a busy highway and basically all there is is tourist shops. In a side street we found a local Pizzeria and got really nice Pizza for half the price of the tourist magnet on the main street. The rest of the evening we spent playing a game called Deluxe Weed which was a lot of fun (no actual weed involved ;)) and I was offering some of the Lytchee liquor I got in Jicaltepec.  The next day we were eager to see the beach and in order to do so we rented bikes in our hotel. Arriving at the coastline we were confronted with ...

Magical Valladolid

Tuesday 13 November, Bacalar Already 10 days have passed after my last post...  After a night out in Merida on Saturday (3rd nov;) where I could practice my Salsa skills and a lazy Sunday morning I took a bus to the town of Valladolid in the center of Yucatan. I arrived at 9pm in my really nice Hostel, had a good chat with the receptionist and went to sleep in the empty 4persons dorm. Valladolid is very close to the famous Chichen Itza, which is a big Mayan temple complex. I, being a bit skeptical about wandering around in tourist masses,  decided to visit a lesser known archaeological site first. So in the morning I took a shared taxi to 'Ek Balam' and in the taxi I met Ana and Memo, a belgium/french couple. At the entrance to the site we paired up with other people to share a guide who gave us a lot of information about the old city and it's king. Some of the ruins of the city are restored but a lot is still hidden under the jungle and only a hill and a few bricks give...

Beauty of Yucatán

Saturday 3rd November 2018, Mérida After a very pleasant flight I arrived in Merida on wednesday noon and I met Diego in his house, who is very kind to host me through Couchsurf. Although he had a heavy cold he invited me join for a event that would be in the evening for ´Dia de Muertos´. After I went for some nice street food and bought some more artesanias (soon I can start my own shop out of my backback :D), I met with Diego in the center to get our faces painted and to meet one of his friends. The women who offered their face painting in the park were highly frequented and for the fitst time in 1,5 month I saw a lot of foreign tourists! Mérida reminds me a bit of Groningen, there are a lot of young people and a lot of culture and tourism as well. After we had our faces ready we went to see differet altars that people showed in the streets and in their houses. There was a really nice and peacful athmosphere despite the big amount of people in the street. Afterwards we met with som...
